Virginia jail forced to revamp medical care

Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville has been strong-handed by the Justice Department in matters of medical and mental health care.

The jail was the focus of a March 2011 investigation in which officials uncovered inadequacies in medical response staff, screening procedures and mental health care programs.

The jail is now required to remedy the problem by hiring properly trained personnel, and jail officials are required to keep track of advancements and efforts.
