A three-year-old Virginian boy, Beckett Lovelace, was bitten by a copperhead snake last weekend while playing on his grandmother’s driveway in Arlington. The boy moved a handful of sand onto a stonewall when he reached into the narrow opening of the wall and was bitten. His mother, Jessica Lovelace, had not realized her son was bitten, because the marks on his hands looked more like scraps. “It wasn’t the type of puffy, fluid swelling. This was rock hard and it was starting to turn gray because the tissue in the blood vessels are starting to atrophy,” she says. After Beckett fell unconscious, he was rushed to the ER, where doctors and poison control identified the marks as a copperhead snake bite.Copperheads are one of the three venomous snakes found in Virginia according to snake expert Kory Steele. Luckily, Beckett did not get a full bite. He is expected to make a full recovery.
