Toyota is planning on increasing its hybrid and electrical vehicles in the upcoming year. Toyota also announced its plans to have a fuel cell vehicle, which runs off hydrogen to produce electricity, by 2015. Toyota announced that it will run an electric model car that closely models the one it sells in Japan for around $45,000. It has a cruise range of 62 miles. Toyota is hoping to expand the hybrid program based on its strong reputation of green cars from its Prius models.
But there has been an increased effort by rivals to eclipse the green models from Toyota, including the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt. Also, consumers still are not interested in hybrids and fuel cell cars that have such a high price tag, instead choosing high mpg gas cars like the Ford Fiesta. Toyota currently has four different models of the Prius, including a new plug in model that is all electric and then switches to a hybrid motor. Toyota has sold over 15,000 of the cars.
