SmarTrip cards going down to $2

SmarTrip card prices will be going down to $2 in October.

Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles says the lower price will make the SmarTrip card equivalent to the $2 surcharge paid by those who take a roundtrip using the paper fare card.

“We are transitioning away from paper fare cards as we prepare to introduce a new fare system,” he said.

Currently the cards cost $5, but those who order the card online receive a $3 discount. When the change occurs, riders will be able to purchase the $2 cards at any Metro sales office or commuter store.
