Shutdown takes toll on DC charities
Many employees of Washington non-profit organizations are being furloughed in response to the government shutdown, which in turn depletes the amount of services the organizations can conduct.
In Columbia Heights, The Latin American Youth Center announced that Wednesday will mark the date of reduction in services, although staff will continue to work without pay.
The Latin American Youth Center provides services to approximately 5,000 youth every year.
The Mary’s Center health facility in Adams Morgan risks a loss of $525,000 in the month of October.
The furloughing of workers is widely due to contracts and lack of Medicaid pay-outs.
