Maryland black colleges engage in dispute over academic programs

A matter of civil rights has spun from a court ruling regarding four historically black colleges in Maryland.

Civil Rights lawyers have addressed the proposal of mediation in the matter of academic programs at predominantly white colleges and their alleged negative effect on historically black colleges.

The duplication of programs is being named a detriment in allowing black colleges to effectively attract students from different racial backgrounds.

Chief counsel of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Jon Greenbaum, commented Tuesday that he hopes the judge’s ruling will bring closure to the dispute and allot for better programs at historically black colleges.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake has deferred judgment in wake of the proposed mediation.
