On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ruling from the Biden administration regarding “ghost” guns. The Supreme Court’s ruling cleared the way for the continued use of serial numbers, background checks, and age verification requirements for buying the kits online. The 7-2 decision allows the regulation of the kits that have become increasingly linked to crime. This comes after President Trump ordered a review of federal agency gun policy that undermines or reverses regulations championed by his predecessor.

As the sale of homemade firearms has grown exponentially, these kits have allowed for easy at-home building of firearms. In his majority opinion, Neil Gorsuch said, “Some home hobbyists enjoy assembling them. But criminals also find them attractive. The number of ghost guns that were found at crime scenes across the country has increased according to federal data. Less than 1,700 were recovered by law enforcement in 2017 but increased to 27,000 in 2023.
