Maryland Governor Wes Moore has stated that the 2026 budget must give a tax break to the state’s middle-class taxpayers. However, he recently raised questions on whether or not the current plan will provide meaningful relief. Maryland lawmakers have just over one week to finalize a $67 billion spending plan that includes $2 billion in cuts and $1 billion in new taxes. This plan includes less than stellar tax cuts for the middle class and has raised taxes in a variety of other areas.
Moore spoke to reporters on Friday saying, “While we are working through all the final details, I’m very clear about what I want the conclusion to be, right?” He went on to say, “The conclusion is that the middle class needs to get a tax cut, that we’ve got to give more breathing room to the middle class, more than this currently, across the board. We’ve got to make sure that the middle class is getting more financial support, right?”
