Krzyzewski breaks coaching record in Men’s Division I Basketball

With Duke’s 74-69 victory over Michigan State Tuesday night, coach Mike Krzyzewski won his 903rd game, breaking the previous record held by Bob Knight. Knight, Krzyzewski’s friend and mentor, set the previous record in 2008. Krzyzewski’s record now stands at 903-284, spanning five decades and four national championships at Duke.

Knight attended Tuesday’s winning game, and was supportive of Krzyzewski’s accomplishment. “I thought it would be neat to be the first coach to win 900 games. Once I reached that, I was hoping Mike would be the first person to surpass it. I also think it is neat for a coach and his former player to have the opportunity to win this many games while each one was coaching at nearly the same time.” Other people in attendance for Tuesday’s game included Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh, members of the 2008 United States Olympic gold medal team, which Krzyzewski also coached.
