John McAfee returns to the United States
Anti-virus software founder John McAfee has returned to the United States, still followed by suspicions that he committed a homicide in the Central American country of Belize. The 67-year-old tycoon tried to keep a low profile in a Miami hotel upon his return. He had been deported from Guatemala on the grounds that he crossed the border from Belize illegally. He is accused of sneaking into Guatemala and hiding out there for weeks to avoid the Belize authorities who want to question him as a person of interest in the death of a U.S. expatriate who lived on the same island as him off the Belizean coast. While Guatemalan authorities have urged McAfee to return to Belize for questioning, they themselves have not filed any charges against him.
Belize’s prime minister, Dean Barrow, has questioned McAfee’s mental stability, saying: “I don’t want to be unkind to the gentleman, but I believe he is extremely paranoid, even bonkers.” McAfee openly admitted he faked a heart attack in Guatemala to buy time for his attorney to file a series of appeals that ultimately prevented his deportation to Belize and allowed him to be returned to the U.S. He also adamantly denies any involvement in the murder case and claims he fled Belize because he was in fear for his life.
“I have absolutely nothing to do with the murder in Belize,” he said Thursday. “This is not about a murder in Belize. This began on the 30th of April of last year when 42 armed soldiers stormed my property.”
It is not clear whether McAfee will be extradited to Belize. The odds of avoiding Belizean police forever do not seem to be in his favor as the United States has a healthy respect for Belize’s justice system and have signed a treaty agreeing to return criminals to each other.
