Hearing set to name street after Bulgarian
The D.C. Council will be hearing testimony about a request to name a street intersection after a Bulgarian man credited with helping and saving the country’s Jewish population during the Holocaust.
The street would honor Dimitar Peshev, a World War II-era Bulgarian legislator. The request came from a local historian seeking to draw attention to Peshev.
The bid sparked controversy when the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum sent a letter to the Bulgarian Embassy accusing the country of not accurately documenting its account of the Holocaust.
A museum historian is scheduled to speak at the hearing on Tuesday, along with Neil Glick, the real estate agent leading the request.
