Former Senator George McGovern dies

Former South Dakota Senator George McGovern, perhaps best known for his failed presidential bid against Richard Nixon in 1972, died on Sunday in Dougherty Hospice Housein Sioux Falls surrounded by family and friends. He was 90 years old. He served in the US Senate for more than 20 years. President Obama called McGovern a “hero of war,””champion of peace,” and “leading voice in the fight against hunger.” McGovern took a leave of absence his studies to enlist in the military and fight in World War II right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Throught his public and private career he campaigned against hunger. He was the director of the Food for Peace Program from 1961 to 1962 and the U.S. ambassador to United Nations Agencies on Food and Agriculture from 1998 to 2001.
