Deen’s ‘Today’ appearance ends in tears
Paula Deen broke down into tears during a “Today” show interview on Wednesday involving her use of racial slurs in the past. The celebrity cook addressed the audience, saying that anyone who has never said something they regretted should pick up a rock and throw it at her head.
Deen stated that she was not a racist and was heartbroken at the controversy that sparked from her own deposition in a lawsuit. Deen has been dropped by the Food Network and as an endorser by Smithfield Foods.
Deen told Matt Lauer that she could only recall using the “n-word” once. She stated that she remembered using the word while telling a story about a black man who had held her at gunpoint while she was working as a bank teller in the 1980s.
“I is what I is and I’m not changing,” she said. “There’s someone evil out there that saw what I worked for and wanted it.”
Lauer tried to end the interview while Deen continued to repeat that anyone who has not sinned should attack her. She expressed that she appreciates her fans’ anger at the Food Network, but that she does not support a boycott of the network.
