D.C. Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe will retire in July after more than 30 years of service, Mayor Gray announced Thursday morning. The District of Colombia’s firefighters union and D.C. Councilmember Tommy Wells have called for Ellerbe’s ouster for months. Ellerbe has stated that he is not being forced out but that it became apparent he would not be able to stay in his job until the end of the year. He will leave the department July 2. When Chief Ellerbe leaves, Assistant Chief Eugene Jones will be promoted to Interim Fire Chief.
