Redskins to move training camp to Richmond in 2013
The Washington Redskins have decided to move their August training camp from Ashburn, Virginia to Richmond starting in 2013, said people with knowledge of the state of affairs on Wednesday. As part of the deal, a $30 million expansion will be coming to the Redskins’ Loudoun County facility, where the team corporate headquarters will remain. The state of Virginia is expected to contribute about $4 million.
A deal in Virginia has been in the making for about a year, Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell said on Wednesday. Although D.C. and Maryland offered more money, the Redskins selected Virginia. “This is yet another major corporation that has decided to stay in Virginia or grow in Virginia or move to Virginia,” Governor McDonnell said outside the governor’s mansion at a news conference. “We are the most business friendly state in America and that’s why even though other jurisdictions offered significant revenue to get them to move, the management and ownership of the Redskins understood there’s no better place to call home…than the commonwealth of Virginia.”
