21 killed in southern Afghanistan suicide attacks

At least 21 people were killed on Wednesday by suicide bombers, who struck a busy market in southern Afghanistan, according to authorities. Provincial Police Chief Abdul Razaq said the bombings injured at least 50 others. The market is normally crowded with civilians and truck drivers, most of them transporting NATO supplies. The first bomber drove into the market place on a motorcycle and detonated his explosives near a restaurant in Kandahar city, which is where NATO troops in the region are based.

As residents flooded the area after the first attack, a second bomber ignited his explosives in the crowd, causing more casualties, according to Razaq. Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban and has been the site of ferocious battles between international forces and insurgents.
