Walgreens settle painkiller allegations

Walgreens will pay $80 million to resolve allegations of accidently permitting painkillers to enter the black market. The charges started when investigators discovered a Walgreens distribution center in Jupiter, Florida filling large orders for prescription painkiller drugs. The action was not reported by the center.

Triple the normal amount of painkillers was delivered to six different pharmacies in Florida. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, pharmacy employees knew the drugs were not legitimately used for medical purposes. Tens of thousands of violations occurred within the pharmacies.
