After threats against Sony and the movie “The Interview,” certain theaters and online services supporting rentals like YouTube and Google Play decided to go ahead with the premiere anyway. The film earned $1 million at the box office when it opened on Christmas day, and the online viewing figures still have yet to be reported. The film, which before the controversy with North Korean espionage and threats received mainly average reviews, has become possibly the most talked about of the year. The film stars Seth Rogen and James Franco. The simultaneous cinema and online release is unprecedented for big studio films, and may herald a change in future film release systems.
