Senate Democrats meet with Obama and Biden about Obamacare
On Wednesday, 15 Democratic senators met with President Obama and Vice President Biden to talk about the state of the healthcare website. A White House official also reported that the meeting included talks about privacy and security in the healthcare system. Democrats, who were originally seen as avid supporters of the Affordable Care Act, are now concerned about citizens’ inability to sign up for new healthcare after their old plans were canceled.
Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado is one person pushing for the enrollment period to be extended. “I urged the president again to extend the enrollment period to give consumers enough time to make an informed decision about their family’s health insurance options,” Udall said. “I also told the president that, for the Affordable Care Act to succeed, consumers need to be confident their personal information is secure.”
Democrats are also beginning to worry that the healthcare dilemma could negatively affect them in the 2014 mid-term elections. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney commented on the president’s attitude toward the political ramifications. “He’s not concerned about the politics of it,” Carney said. “He obviously campaigned on it in 2008. He fought hard to get the legislation passed in 2010. The president believes that delivering of access to affordable and quality care is policy that makes good politics.”
