Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell has been officially chosen by the Republican party to act as Senate majority leader in January’s new Congress. The GOP elected McConnell by acclamation in a closed-door meeting Thursday. The role of the Senate majority leader is to set the agenda, in cooperation with the House Speaker, currently John Boehner. McConnell, 72, was elected to his sixth term in last week’s midterm elections. The GOP gained the majority for the first time in eight years, with the largest majority since the WWII era.
