Jazz legend Dave Brubeck dies at the age of 91
Dave Brubeck, the California born pianist and composer who many say defined west coast jazz music, has died just a day away from his 92nd birthday. His lengthy string of artistic accomplishments, garnered over a 60 year career, include citations from foreign governments, major universities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and President Bill Clinton. Brubeck participated in an octet, a quartet and a trio, though he gained the most fame as an integral part of the quartet West Coast Cool. Their 1959 record Take Five was the first million-selling record in jazz history, and Brubeck subsequently became the first jazz musician to appear on the cover of Time.
