DC shuts down 9 restaurants because of sales taxes

The District of Columbia is shutting down nine restaurants that city officials say failed to pay over $500,000 in sales taxes.

Five of the restaurants are Subway sandwich franchises. The D.C. tax office revoked sales and use of tax certificates of the restaurants on Thursday.

The tax office said it made numerous attempts to collect the outstanding taxes, but the owner did not respond to several collection notices.

The restaurants are located throughout the city. In Georgetown, a Subway restaurant was closed along with a KFC, a Taco Bell, and a Pizza Hut. The tax office says that additional collection actions are possible, including bank levies or seizures.
