Ashton Kutcher sues California DMV

Actor Ashton Kutcher’s Katalyst Productions and Soda and Pop, Inc sued the California Department of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday for backing out of a planned reality series. In their complaint, they allege that the DMV committed to a “docu-series” in 2010 that would capture the everyday commotion and humor at more than 170 DMV offices across the state of California. According to Kutcher’s team, DMV agreed to open up its offices for filming at least four half-hour episodes, and left open the possibility of up to six seasons. Katalyst, which already spent “hundreds of thousands of dollars” developing the series and has already made a deal to produce the first episodes of the show for TruTV, is seeking at least $1.44 million in damages. According to the suit, DMV withdrew from the deal saying the project was no longer in its “best interest.”
