Oakland protests turn violent as police fire tear gas

Tear gas was turned on Occupy Oakland protesters early Thursday after protesters defied orders to disperse. On Wednesday, demonstrators called for a general strike, and effectively shut down the Port of Oakland. Authorities say protesters had begun to throw rocks and shoot fireworks after a day of “primarily peaceful” demonstrations, and police responded with tear gas.

Earlier in the day, demonstrators made their way to the Port of Oakland. They disrupted operations by blocking exits with fencing and illegally parked vehicles. No trucks were allowed in or out of the area. According to one of the protesters, Ben Bruso, the port closure “sends a message to the corporate world that we’re not going to sit by and take it anymore.”
