FBI agents raided D.C. Councilman Jack Evans’ home in Georgetown on Friday morning. The search came a day after Evans submitted a letter of resignation from the Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board. His resignation followed a telling 20-page memo from the Metro Board Ethics Committee disclosing Evans’ ethics violations. The memo revealed Evans was allegedly using his position in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to favor a company (Colonial Parking) that has paid him $50,000. Investigators also discovered that Evans had called for an investigation on a competitor of Colonial Parking while he was sharing confidential Metro information with Colonial Parking.

In light of the FBI investigation, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson announced that the D.C. Council would be investigating Evans independently as well. He also revealed that he has decided to remove Evans from his position as chair of the finance committee, the committee responsible for setting the tax policy for Washington, D.C.

At 6:00 a.m., FBI agents began searching the home on P Street, NW in the District as police officers secured the area. In an email, the FBI Washington Field Office spokeswoman Samantha Shero said, “The FBI is present for court-authorized law enforcement activity; we cannot provide further comment.” Though federal prosecutors did not disclose what they were looking for, a number of boxes were taken from the home during the three-hour search.
