Kauai has over 15 popular scuba diving sites. The sites located in the southern and northern coast of Kauai are ideal for newbies because the waters are relatively calm in these regions. If you are an experienced scuba diver, you should opt for the sites in the west and east coasts because these sites are prone to strong currents and waves.

Even though scuba diving is a year-round activity in Kauai, the season between May through September has the best diving conditions. During this period, the water temperature ranges from 70 to 77F, and the visibility is almost crystal clear – reaching up to 100 feet. Kauai dive sites have a wide variety of endemic marine fish – which are only found in the Hawaiian Islands. The latest laws in Hawaii state all divers are required to wear environmentally friendly sunscreen when diving in Kauai. Here are some of the best Kauai scuba diving sites.

Anahola Beach
Anahola Beach is located in Kauai North Shore. This white sandy beach is popular for scuba diving and snorkelling. Shore diving is the latest fad in Anahola Beach. When you swim towards the reef, you will be passing by a patch of boulders that are scattered over the sandy bottom. Swimming just a few minutes will take you to the reef. The reef is sparsely covered with corals. Although you may not find too many corals in this region, your underwater diving experience will be compensated with the vast amount of fish such as parrotfish, wrasse, surgeonfish, and triggerfish. The average depth is around 40 feet when scuba diving in Anahola Beach. Newbies should stay within the inner side of the reef without swimming towards the ocean side. There are strong currents and waves towards the ocean side.

Koloa Landing
Koloa Landing is located in Kauai South Shore. The average depth in the area is about 40 feet and free from harsh currents and strong waves. That’s why Koloa Landing is ideal for newbie divers and a preferred site for taking the certification course of scuba diving. This region is considered the refuge for Hawaii’s state fish – the reef triggerfish or the Humu Humu Nuku Nuku Apu A’a. Koloa is one of the best scuba diving sites for shore diving where one could bring his or her scuba gear package. As soon as one enters the water, he or she may notice the visibility isn’t that clear. But it will get clear once he or she reaches the rocky edge near the reef.

Tunnels Beach
This site is located in Kauai North Shore. It contains gold-colored sand and lush green forestry in the background. Hence, the site attracts thousands of divers, swimmers, and beachgoers each year. It has a depth of 50 feet and green sea turtles. Once you swim to the edge of the inner reef, you will come across a horseshoe shape reef where you can spend most of your underwater time. Don’t dive during the winter months because the site will be exposed to strong winds and waves during these months.
