Senate rejects gun measures
On Monday, senators were unable to gather enough bipartisan support to pass a series of gun control measures in an effort to enact tighter curbs on firearms. Even after both sides introduced measures they said would have strengthened background checks after the shooting in Orlando, the parties were not able to put aside their partisan gridlock long enough to put any measures in place. “I’m mortified by today’s vote but I’m not surprised by it,” Sen. Chris Murphy said Monday evening. “The NRA has a vice-like grip on this place.” Murphy sponsored one of the failed measures that would expand background checks. “I don’t think democracy allows for this Congress to be do out of step with the American public for long,” he said.

‘The Voice’ singer fatally shot in Chicago
Singer Alejandro Fuentes-Rosas, a former contestant on Mexico’s “The Voice,” died after he was shot in Chicago. Fuentes-Rosas, 45, was shot in the head on his birthday Thursday and died Saturday. Police said a man approached the singer with a handgun and ordered him to get out of the car. When the victim resisted, the gunman fired several rounds, striking Fuentes-Rosas in the head. The shooting occurred on the same street where Fuentes-Rosas was the president of a music instruction school. So far, no arrests have been made.

Appeals court to hear case of rabbi who videotaped women at bath
A Washington appeals court is hearing the case of an Orthodox rabbi who secretly videotaped women undressing and using a changing room at a Jewish ritual bath for years. Rabbi Bernard Freundel’s lawyer is expected to argue that Freundel’s 6.5 year prison sentence is illegal and should have been limited to one year. In 2014, Freundel was arrested after one of his recording devices was found at the National Capital Mikvah in Washington. Prosecutors discovered he filmed around 150 women using recording devices that were hidden in a clock radio, a fan and a tissue box holder. Freundel acknowledged that he secretly recorded women at the mikvah from 2009 to 2014 and ultimately took a plea deal.

US Court rejects Libertarian Party ballot challenge
A federal appeals court has reject an appeal by the Libertarian Party of Virginia that challenged the state’s policy of listing candidates from major parties first on ballots. According to Virginia law, the candidates that are listed first on ballots are those who belong to parties that received at least ten percent of the vote for statewide office in two previous general elections. Currently, that policy applies to only the Republican and Democratic parties. The Libertarian Party argued that the policy gives an unfair advantage to major parties and violates the Constitution. On Monday, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that the policy “imposes little burden” on the minor party candidates’ constitutional rights.

Md. police deploy body cameras
All police officers in Montgomery County will soon be wearing body cameras when out on patrol. So far, 745 cameras have been deployed. The department hopes to deploy 850 cameras by July. “Seeing [an incident]from the very beginning to the very end with a body camera is an a lot more accurate portrayal of what actually happened,” said Assistant Police Chief Luther Reynolds with the Montgomery County Police Department. The department hopes that the use of the cameras will help expedite court cases because lawyers will have video evidence to refer to. Reynolds says the cameras also help de-escalate events because officers modify their behavior when they know a camera is present.
