D.C. police whistleblower trial postponed after closing arguments

The jury in the Hilton Burton whistleblower trial left court without reaching a verdict after deliberating for several hours Tuesday afternoon. Captain Hilton Burton was demoted two full ranks and removed as commander of the Special Operations Division because of some careless remarks that he made to the D.C. Council. Burton explained to the council that celebrity escorts were routine and a longstanding department practice. After being demoted to captain, Burton was assigned to the Medical Services Branch. This case has been going on for over two weeks, and the jury is trying to determine if D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier lied to the public and retaliated against Burton. Burton’s attorney, Marc Wilhite said what he did at the D.C. city council in June of 2011 took courage and exposed the corruption and dishonesty of the chief, and other members of the department. Burton wasn’t singled out for problems with his job performance until after he testified at council. Wilhite added that when Burton became a target of an internal affairs investigation, he was excluded from meetings and marginalized. He also made it clear that Burton was not retaliated against and forcibly removed by a chief who was concerned about his performance at two deadly barricades and a host of other issues. Deliberations are set to resume Wednesday morning in D.C. Superior Court.
