Record-breaking independent spending on congressional contest so far

This year’s congressional race has resulted in a record amount of independent spending on negative campaigning. The Washington Post reports that 80% of money spent by independent groups has gone into attack ads against one candidate or another. The largest single focus of this trend has been Senate Candidate Thom Tillis, (R-NC), who has faced $26 million in negative ad campaigns. In fact, the overall non-candidate campaign spending may break the previous spending record that dates back to the 2012 presidential election. Thus far big-money independent groups have spent more than $594 million this cycle.
