Leading to an end in combat operations in Afghanistan later this year, President Barack Obama has announced plans to keep close to 10,000 troops in the country if a security agreement is signed by Afghan officials. Obama plans to have virtually all U.S. forces out of Afghanistan by 2016. “We will bring America’s longest war to a responsible end,” Obama said. Since the deployment of U.S. forces to Iraq and Afghanistan, there have been up to 100,000 military personnel in Afghanistan at a given point in time—over 2,300 American troops have been killed during combat operations. There are currently 32,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
