On Thursday, Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice pleaded not guilty in a New Jersey court, following a five-minute court hearing. Rice was in court following a February 15, 2014, incident inside an Atlantic City casino elevator that resulted in assault charges involving his now-wife, Janay Palmer. Attorney Michael Diamondstein stated ”There was a disagreement between him and his wife. He made a mistake. He loves Janay and wants to move forward. This was a momentary lapse of reason.” Rice has applied for a New Jersey program that allows charges to be dropped for first-time offenders that successfully complete the program. If convicted, Rice could face up to five years in prison.
