Man gets 10 years for 1995 shooting death
Maurice Fair, 35, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatally shooting another man in 1995.
Fair pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed in the death of 18-year-old James W. Belton. Fair, who has been in prison since 2007, was sentenced on Tuesday and will be given credit for his time served.
Belton was shot twice in the head in his apartment. Fair went to Belton’s apartment to smoke marijuana, but became fearful that Belton would hurt him.
In 2004, Belton was hospitalized for a mental health evaluation. He told the staff he had killed a man at that time, but he was not arrested.
