McDuffie, newest member of D.C. Council

Kenyan McDuffie will be sworn in as the newest member of the Washington, D.C. Council. McDuffie, a Democrat and D.C. native, will be avowed on Wednesday afternoon as the new D.C. Councilmember for Ward 5, replacing Harry Thomas Jr., who is headed to prison for three years after pleading guilty to embezzling more than $350,000 from the city.

McDuffie won a special election last month to fill the vacated seat left by Thomas. He will serve the remainder of Thomas’ term, which runs through 2014. McDuffie is a former prosecutor and civil rights attorney who resigned from a position in Mayor Vincent Gray’s administration to run for the council seat.
