43 dead, including hockey stars, after Russian jet crash

At least 43 people are dead–including several top hockey stars–after a Russian jet crashed just after takeoff Wednesday. Two others were critically injured when the Yak-42 plane crashed into a riverbank along the Volga River 150 miles north of Moscow.

The plane was carrying the Lokomotiv ice hockey team to Belarus for a game on Thursday. The plane, built in 1993, belonged to a small Moscow-based Yak service company. It is one of the worst planes crashes in history involving a sports team.
