A child was tragically killed in Prince George’s County, Maryland on Friday after officers say that a driver fleeing a traffic stop crashed into four cars in Capitol Heights. The incident began on the 6000 block of Marlboro Pike at around 6:25 pm where an officer tried to stop the driver, according to a news release from the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. After initially stopping, the driver fled the scene.
Another police officer heard the description of the car on the radio and attempted to stop the driver on a different road. Shortly after the police officers tried to stop the car, the driver crashed into four other vehicles that were transported to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. A woman who was in the same car with the child was also transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
Investigators said that people inside the other vehicles involved in the crash had minor injuries. The driver of the car was then taken into custody, transported to the hospital, and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General Independent Investigations Division said it is investigating the actions of the officers who were “equipped with body-worn cameras.” The investigators have said that they will also review dashcam footage from the two police vehicles that were on the scene.
