On Sunday, the three women who lead Washington D.C. made an appearance NBC’s “Meet the Press” to discuss crucial issues at hand. Newly elected mayor Muriel Bowser was questioned on her relationship with Congress. Bowser commented that she looks forward to working with them, and added that they should focus their attention on issues of national importance and let the local officials do their job. Bowser was also asked if the city would sue over the matter of legalizing marijuana for recreational use. She responded that the status of the law has to be made clear, and that every option was going to be explored.

Bowser was also pressed on the District’s budget issues and if she’d push for full statehood. She said that the budget will be balanced accordingly, and that residents of D.C. deserve all the same privileges as residents from other states. D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier was questioned on police treatment of African-Americans. She said that it’s really all about establishing strong relationships throughout the city. And finally, Meet the Press host Chuck Todd talked to D.C. Chancellor of Schools Kaya Henderson about any possible changes in the school systems. She replied that the urban school districts are dramatically improving, and families are starting to move back into the area.
