According to a White House statement released on Wednesday, the United States has deployed 80 troops to Chad to help the search for the Nigerian girls kidnapped by Boko Haram last month. The statement also read, “These personnel will support the operation of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area.” Although the troops are armed, “These are not combat infantry troops that we put into Chad,” said Pentagon spokesperson Rear Admiral John Kirby. It is believed that the kidnapped girls may have been moved from Nigeria to neighboring Chad or Cameroon, but as of now, nothing is certain. In addition to the U.S. manpower deployed to Chad, a U.S. Predator drone will also be used to conduct reconnaissance.
