Tomatoes, shoes thrown at Hillary Clinton as she holds meeting in Egypt

Protestors in Egypt threw tomatoes and shoes at U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s motorcade on Sunday, while shouting “Monica, Monica, Monica” as she left the newly reopened U.S. consulate in Alexandria, Egypt. The shouts of “Monica” refer to Monica Lewinsky, who had an affair with former President Bill Clinton. The former first lady said she was in the city to respond to critics who believe Washington, D.C. has taken sides in Egyptian politics.

At the ceremony to reopen the consulate, which closed in 1993 due to budget constraints, Clinton said, “I want to be clear that the United States is not in the business, in Egypt, of choosing winners and losers, even if we could, which, of course, we cannot.” She continued, “I have come to Alexandria to reaffirm the strong support of the United States for the Egyptian people and for their democratic future.” The protestors threw shoes, tomatoes, and a water bottle as Clinton’s staff walked to their vans after the ceremony, but her car was not hit, according to a senior State Department official. Clinton met with new President Mohamed Morsy on Saturday, urging him to assert “full authority” of his office. The secretary of state stressed that it is up to the people of Egypt to shape the country’s political future and also said the U.S. would work “to support the military’s return to a purely national security role.”
