Syria to participate in UN General Assembly

On Monday, the Syrian regime spoke at the United Nations General Assembly. Foreign Minister Walid Moallem focused on the U.N.’s resolution to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons.

“Syria, by acceding to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, proves its commitment against the use of such weapons, while at the same time calls on the international community to shoulder its responsibility against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East,” he said. “Syria is known for fulfilling its obligations and commitments; therefore, I assure you the Syria’s commitment to the full implementation of the provisions of the convention.”

“There is no civil war in Syria, but it is a war against terror that recognizes no values, nor justice, nor equality, and disregards any rights or laws,” Moallem added.

Meanwhile, the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons will leave Syria on Monday after investigating claims by both the government and the rebels regarding chemical weapon use in the country. The U.N. inspectors will not be responsible for pin-pointing the source of the weapons though; only whether they were actually used. The team did confirm that the weapons were used in August’s attacks.
