Only minutes after the Proton-M rocket took flight in Baikonur, Kazakhstan, ground officials lost contact as the rocket veered off its course, causing an emergency system to shut down the propulsion system. The majority of the rocket and its payload, a communications satellite, were burned in the atmosphere, although parts of the rocket could be floating around in an unintended orbit, and eventually come crashing down to the Earth. According to Russia’s Federal Space Agency, the rocket was approximately 100 miles into its ascent before it was destroyed.
