Russia acknowledges Syrian rebel gains as Assad regime shows signs of crumbling

The Assad regime of Syria has apparently lost what had been one of its most steadfast allies; Russia. Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s top Middle East diplomat and the leader of NATO, grudgingly stated that the Syrian Free Army has gained the upper hand in the almost two year war against Bashar al-Assad and his regime. “Unfortunately, it is impossible to exclude a victory of the Syrian opposition,” said Mr. Bogdanov.

The US State Department expressed appreciation for Bogdanov’s remark. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said that the United States would like to “commend the Russian government for finally waking up to the reality and acknowledging that the regime’s days are numbered,” commenting that “The regime and their Russian supporters alike have been living in a bubble of illusion.” But the State Department also called on Russia to act upon his words by withdrawing what it called “residual support for the Assad regime” by severing military contracts and economic support.

Russia has however indicated that it is making a plan to evacuate its citizens from Syria and has a plan for withdrawing personnel from its embassy there should they deem it necessary.

“We must look squarely at the facts, and the trend now suggests that the regime and the government in Syria are losing more and more control and more and more territory,” Mr. Bogdanov said to Russia’s Public Chamber.
