Following protests in Seoul against North Korea’s regime, North Korea sent a threatening fax to its Southern neighbor, saying it could “strike mercilessly without notice [if]the provocation against our highest dignity is to be repeated in the downtown of Seoul.” The protests broke out on the second anniversary of the death of former North Korean ruler Kim Jong II. Symbols of previous leaders as well as the North Korean flag were burned in the protests.

Kim Minseok, the spokesman for South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, says that a response was sent back to North Korea. “The reply was sent through wired message and in the fax message, we warned that if North Korea is to carry out provocation, we will firmly retaliate,” Minseok said.
