Israel urges for a deal with Iran that would prevent war

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has continued to urge for a deal on Iran’s nuclear program that would put an end to its enrichment of uranium. That process could be used to obtain fuel for an atomic bomb. On Wednesday, Netanyahu traveled to Moscow to talk with the Kremlin about the deal and economic sanctions on Iran, which would require it to allow inspections of its nuclear program. Netanyahu commented to the German newspaper Bild: “And if they refuse to do so, increase the sanctions. Because the options are not a bad deal or war. There is a third option: Keep the pressure up; in fact, increase the pressure.”

Also on Wednesday, talks continued in Geneva about the plan to better control Iran’s nuclear capability.  However, President Obama told U.S. Senators on Tuesday that harsher sanctions should not be implemented yet. Both he and Secretary of State John Kerry think this will improve the possibility of a future deal.

Republicans and Democrats from the House Foreign Affair Committee commented in a letter to Obama though, that Kerry’s plan may not work at all. “The United States cannot allow Iran to continue to advance toward a nuclear weapons capability while at the same time providing relief from the sanctions pressure we worked so hard to build,” said committee chairman Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., and Rep. Eliot Engel of New York.

In regards to Israel’s fears, Kerry commented: “Nothing that we are doing here, in my judgment, will put Israel at any additional risk. We believe it reduces risk.”
