Iraq’s parliament has now postponed its next session until mid-August, which will delay the new government, despite the many threats from extremists who have seized control of a large part of the country and have declared the establishment of a new Islamic state. Lawmakers met for the new parliament’s first session since the elections took place in April, but the meeting ended with no agreement on a new prime minister, president and parliament speaker. Many Iraqi politicians want the removal of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, since they blame his pro-Shiite leadership for shunning the Sunni minority.
