Protests have continued in Hong Kong, with confirmation of at least 56 people injured in the clashes between police and protesters. Most of these injuries have resulted from the use of tear gas, a neurotoxin, and pepper spray by the police. Wednesday begins China’s National Day, a two day public holiday, and celebrants are expected to join the protestors. Demonstrators oppose Beijing’s plan to choose party-supportive candidates for HK’s 2017 election, the first with universal suffrage in the former British colony. Protest leaders told the Guardian they plan to occupy government buildings if HK Chief Executive CY Leung does not step down. The protests are being dubbed the “umbrella revolution” by many on social media, both because of the use of umbrellas to protect demonstrators from tear gas, and also images that show protestors holding umbrellas over police to protect them from Tuesday night’s rain.
