Chávez revolution continues

Hugo Chávez’s political revolution will continue as voters chose to elect Chávez’s handpicked heir, Nicolas Maduro. Maduro will serve the remainder of Chávez’s six-year term.

Maduro’s opponent, state governor Henrique Capriles refused to recognize the vote on Sunday and has requested a recount. Maduro only slightly defeated Capriles, with over 99 percent of the vote counted. Maduro had 50.6 percent of the vote, whereas Capriles  had 49.1 percent. “We are not going to recognize the result until every vote is counted, one by one,” Capriles said.

Although Chávez’s reign will continue, Maduro’s anti-American message used during his campaign might be put aside in order to repair Venezuela’s relations with the U.S. Over the weekend, Maduro spoke briefly with former governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson and stated, “We want to improve the relationship with the U.S., regularize the relationship.” However, Maduro seems confident in his ability to continue oil sales that Venezuela provides to Cuba, leaders who are allies of Chávez.

Maduro’s supporters also made comments about his rule, claiming that he lacks Chávez’s sharp political zeal and instincts. Questions remain about the effectiveness of Maduro’s ability to lead. He faces many challenges throughout the remainder of Chávez’s term; the economy suffers from high inflation, which reached 20 percent last year. Chronic food and medicine shortages are also an issue. Economists believe the country could soon fall into a recession.
