Burkina Faso’s President Blaise Compaore resigned Friday amid violent protests of his 27-year tenure, leaving the country in the control of military chief General Honore Nabere Traore. Gen. Traore has stated that he will lead the country through the political transition and upcoming elections, reports CNN. Compaore said earlier that he would dissolve the government but remain in office until new elections, but revised that decision Friday. Traore has left security forces in place to maintain order. Protestors stormed the parliament building Thursday, setting the building on fire in a violent escalation of recent protests. The country continues to issue visas, but flights in and out of the capital city, Ouagadougou, have been suspended. Compaore came to power in a bloody coup in 1987.
