In a dramatic departure from previous material on the subject of homosexuality, the Vatican released a report Monday that includes the idea that lesbian and gay people “have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community.” The report comes out of the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family held this week in preparation for a large meeting next October. Before this report, comments on homosexuality called it “intrinsically disordered,” if not more harmful or negative names. The new report, yet to be translated into policy or doctrine, encourages fair treatment of same sex partnerships, although still declining to call them marriage. More specific detail and analysis on the allowances in the report can be found here.
