A week after earthquake, Nepal still needs food and supplies

Nepal’s government is reiterating its appeal to international donors to send basic food supplies, tents, and tarpaulins in the wake of last weekend’s catastrophic earthquake. They are also asking that donors send money if they cannot send things that are immediately necessary. Nepal’s finance minister stated that the country has been receiving “things like tuna fish and mayonnaise,” but “grains, salt and sugar” are what is really needed, along with about 400,000 tents. So far, Nepal’s government has only been able to provide 30,000 tents to the people who need them. A week after a colossal earthquake killed more than 6,600 people, many secluded villages remain cut off from help. U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos says aid workers still face “immense logistical challenges.” An estimated eight million people were affected by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake.
