Frederick Butler, a supporter of former Mayor Adrian Fenty and political activist, filed a recall notice against the current Mayor of D.C., Vincent Gray, and D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown. On Wednesday morning, Butler said they have “betrayed the public trust.” Both men are facing federal investigations for campaign activities.

According to the Associated Press, Gray and Brown will have 10 days to submit a response stating why they believe they should remain in office. After this task, Butler will have 180 days to collect signatures of no less than 10% of registered voters, which is around 45,000 people in the District. Along with these signatures, the petition must contain signatures of no less than 10% of the voters in at least five of the District’s eight election wards. “My focus remains where it should, with the work the citizens of the District elected me to do,” Gray said in a statement. “Just last month, the Census confirmed that D.C. was now the most desirable place to live in the United States, I intend to keep it that way.”
